Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta Close to Finishing Debut Albums

There's no rest for the signed on the American Idols Live! tour -- just ask runner-up Adam Lambert and fourth-place finisher Allison Iraheta, who are using any down time on the road to continue working on their debut albums, which are both due in November.

Lambert tells Billboard.com that his set is "about midway" to being finished. "We recorded a bunch of stuff before the tour started, and I wrote a handful of stuff," he reports. "We have three or four weeks after the tour ends that I have to record like crazy, but we have a lot of material to do that with."

Lambert says the album "has elements of rock, of course, but it has a lot of pop sensibilities to it. It's really current, really fresh and yet still melodically and vocally it's nodding to the '70s and '80s classics. I know I got most of my credibility on 'Idol' doing those songs from those eras, and it wouldn't make sense for me to do an album that runs away from it."

Among Lambert's collaborators so far have been RedOne, Linda Perry, Max Martin and Greg Wells. The album is so far unnamed -- "I want to see what ends up on the album before I come up with a title," he says -- and will likely be comprised of all-original songs, though he says that "there might be a cover on there. It's a maybe." Similarly, he has not yet recorded any duets but says "the jury's still out. It really could happen."

Iraheta, meanwhile, has been writing songs with Kevin Rudolf and David Hodges for her album, which she says will "definitely have that rock sound to it. It'll be fun, and there's gonna be some deep stuff, too -- like, lyrics about what can possibly be happening to other people in the world right now that I've gone through myself, but also melodically, just some good, slow rock ballads."

Iraheta says she's feeling "less pressure" than either Lambert or American Idol Season 8 "Idol" champion Kris Allen. "They're not in my face as much as they are in theirs," she notes. Lambert, meanwhile, acknowledges the weight of expectations.

"I do feel a little bit of pressure," he says. "There's a lot of hype. I've been fortunate enough to have a lot of attention, which is a great thing for somebody in my position, with an album coming out. I think people are going to like what they hear. I hope they do, at least."

American Idol Adam Lambert Halfway Done with "Eclectic" Debut Album

He’s in the midst of the hectic Idols Live tour, dodging “provocative items” tossed on stage by hysterical fans, but Adam Lambert has been hard at work on his debut album, which he says is well underway.

“We did a lot of work on it right before the tour started. I wrote a lot with various producers and writers and recorded a handful of songs,” he told PEOPLE on a call during a tour stop. “We’ve been doing a lot of work on it during the tour as well … We’re still gathering material and we’re scheduling more recording sessions for when it’s over, so we’re about halfway done.”

Lambert, who’s already done a photo shoot for the album, promises it will be “quite eclectic.”

“There are songs on there that are anthems; there are song that make you want to dance; there are songs that make you feel sexy; there are songs that touch you, hopefully, with more emotional, insightful, deeper lyrics,” he says. “There are songs that are more in the line with a rock sound. There are some that are really pop-oriented.”

There’s something for everyone, according to American Idol’s reigning runner-up, which “I’m really proud of,” he says. “I can’t wait to see people’s reaction. It’s just going to be fun.”

Something else to be proud of: His recent partnership with DonorsChoose.org, an online charity effort aimed at getting high-need public school classrooms the resources and supplies they need.

After the Idol finale, “I started getting gifts like crazy and people really starting to spend a lot of money on things for me,” Lambert says. “I don’t need them to spend money on me. I’d rather they spend money on people in need, so I thought I would redirect that energy.”

At DonorsChoose.org/adamlambert, teachers post exactly what students need for specific educational projects and donors can choose the projects they want to support.

“I know that the people that are throwing things up on the stage are getting as much a kick out of it as I am,” he says. “It makes me laugh. When they actually throw it at me, though, that’s a little scary.”

Adam Lambert talks about the American Idols Live Tour

American Idol Season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert is currently on tour with the rest of the Top 10 Idols. While he was traveling around the country, we had the opportunity to interview Adam and he opened up about his loyal fans, his upcoming album, and more.

Adam describes an average day on the Idols Summer Tour as "jam packed." They arrive at the venues at around 1pm, head to the dressing room for a snack, take part in press events every other day, attend meet and greets with the fans, prepare for the show, and have dinner. In addition to that busy schedule, Adam finds time to do his own makeup before every show. Adam said it wasn't his theater background that taught him how to do makeup, "I used to do my own makeup when I went to the clubs in Hollywood," Adam said.

Meeting his fans in 50 cities across the nation has "been a pleasant surprise," Adam said. "I have a diverse range of fans which is really cool. I've met fans that range from people in their late fifties to kids." Adam has a message for his large, diverse, and devoted fan base: "I love you guys so much. Thanks for coming out and supporting me on tour."

On a couple of the tour stops, fans have thrown some interesting objects and garments on the stage as Adam performs. "It's become a bit of a tradition for people to throw things on the stage while I'm performing 'Fame' during the Bowie medley. They've thrown bras, panties, handcuffs, a blue boa, and most recently a red leather tassled whip." Ever the performer, Adam doesn't just let the objects rest on the stage. "I have fun with it and I pick up the items and play with them. I hope none of the undergarments hit me in the face!"

Riding a Rocket: Adam Lambert's just getting a handle on his American Idol-fueled fame

From the moment he sang for “American Idol” voters in February, Adam Lambert became the subject of more pop-culture buzz than any contestant in the show's history. But it wasn't until “Idol” ended in May that the Entertainment Weekly and Rolling Stone cover boy got to experience the Adam Lambert Effect for himself.

And frankly, it kind of freaked him out.

“I didn't get out in the real world all that much during my stay on 'Idol,'the 27-year-old singer said from Portland, Ore., where the “American Idols Live” tour kicked off earlier this month. The tour comes to the San Diego Sports Arena on Saturday.

Allison Iraheta and Scott MacIntyre interview - American Idol Live

Scott MacIntyre and Allison Iraheta interviews backstage at American Idol Live

The Idols Live Tour

On the second night of the American Idols Live: 2009 Tour, the 10 were settling comfortably into their lives as wandering rock stars. At 3 p.m., the day was gray, frigid and windy outside. The subdued crowd of a hundred or so leaned in eerie silence against the metal barricade as Megan Joy walked down the row singing autographs and posing for pictures.

Inside, the ancient Dome seemed like it was just waking up, a universe away from the frenzied hub of activity around the tour kickoff at the Paul Allen-built stadium. In a cafeteria-like room set up with round tables and folding chairs, half the Idols came to visit the four members of the press corps on hand.

Building up to Show 2, gone already was the repressed frenzy of anticipation the Idols felt in the hours before opening night. Now that it was over, nearly all confessed to fighting back serious attacks of nerves, either from excitement or fear, in the countdown to Sunday night’s show. The giddiness that followed opening night seemed to have led the Idols' emotional roller coaster on a long loop-the-loop; the group reported staying up until 5 a.m. Monday, despite fatigue, to celebrate their their bow.
